information about us

Please note the project has now completed its task and have handed the memorial over to the safe keeping for perpetuity by Watchet Town Council

We are a small, local charity group that was formed by a variety of people from all walks of life including Ex-Servicemen, Town Councillors, Royal British Legion members, Residents and Local Businesses, all eager to raise money for a fitting memorial for the fallen in WW1 & WW11.

The Memorial will be sited next to the Watchet Library, where families of the fallen can finally pay their respects. The whole area has been enhanced with refurbishment of the railings and benches, a new information board and planters, which will have low lying sensory plants.

The group have campaigned tirelessly to raise the money for the memorial, with events such as auctions where even the Duchess of Cornwall kindly gave us champagne and glasses plus a donation, to a hog roast and a Burn’s night supper.

As future custodians, we went to the schools and after much deliberation a design, which one of the children created, was taken as the design for the memorial.

The researches completed by Sara Summers will be shared with the Heritage Centre, Museums, Library, schools and at some time in the future, with local collaboration, a book of the Memorial.

The unveiling and dedication is on Saturday the 28th of June 2014, chosen because it is the 100th anniversary of the start of the Great War. Watchet lost 40 of its brave men out of a total population of 360.
